The site

The site at Sao Joao do Pico is appropriate since dead sperm whales were brought ashore here by whalers of the village many years ago, and living whales can still be seen in the deep water a mile off shore. Now they provide interest for the thousands of whale watcher visitors within sight from our garden and the display.

We are on a cliff top with an unobstructed view of the ocean and 9000 miles straight South to the Antarctic. Twenty three species of cetaceans occur here and many have been seen from the museum garden. A lookout is provided; all you need is time and sharp eyes to spot your first sperm whales!
